No time to lose: New UNICEF data show need for urgent action on female genital mutilation and child marriage

London/New York – The UK Government and UNICEF are hosting today a first-ever Girl Summit to rally support for much faster progress to end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage – two practices that affect millions of girls across the globe.

UNICEF data released today show that while prevalence has decreased slightly over the past three decades, rates of progress need to be scaled up dramatically, simply to offset population growth in the countries where the practices are most common.

“FGM and child marriage profoundly and permanently harm girls, denying them their right to make their own decisions and to reach their full potential. They are detriments to the girls themselves, their families, and their societies,” said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. “Girls are not property; they have the right to determine their destiny. When they do so, everyone benefits.”

Ending Child Marriage - Girls Not Brides Strategy 2014-2016

Girls Not Brides was created to help bring an end to child marriage, so that girls can have the opportunity to thrive and become full and equal members of society. The overall strategic objectives of theglobal civil societyPartnership, as agreed upon by the members in 2011, are:

  • Increased awareness of the harmful impact of child marriage at the local, national and international levels;

  • Expanded policy, financial and other support to end child marriage and to support married girls; and

  • Strengthened learning and coordination among organisations working to end child marriage. While these aims are broad, they provide all Girls Not Brides members – whether acting individually or as groups – with a sense of how their work fits into the overall movement. However, with the increased global momentum on child marriage, members have been keen to identify more specific objectives for the Partnership to help focus our efforts and to maximise our impact.This three-year strategy was developed following a series of consultations with members of Girls Not Bridesfrom around the world, as well as with other key partners and stakeholders.

Informal Economy Monitoring Study Sector Report: Home-Based Workers

Home-based workers produce goods or services for the market from within or around their own homes: stitching garments and weaving textiles; producing craft products; processing and preparing food items; assembling or packaging electronics, automobile parts, and pharmaceutical products; selling goods or providing services (laundry, hair-cutting, beautician services); or doing clerical or professional work; among other activities. Although they remain largely invisible, home-based workers are engaged in many branches of industry and represent a significant share of urban employment in some countries, particularly for women and especially in Asia.
