Trafficking in Persons Report 2014

We each have a responsibility to make this horrific and all-too-common crime a lot less common. And our work with victims is the key that will open the door to real change—not just on behalf of the more than 44,000 survivors who have been identified in the past year, but also for the more than 20 million victims of trafficking who have not.

The 2014 Trafficking in Persons Reportis available in PDF and HTML formats. Due to its large size, the PDF has been separated into sections for easier download.

Child and forced marriage - manifestation of gender discrimination

“Child marriage is rooted in unequal gender status and power relations that can result in the perpetual subjugation of girls and women. In the absence of viable legal remedies, discriminatory cultural practices based on stereotypical views of women’s roles and sexuality are among the structural causes of child and forced marriage,” said Flavia Pansieri, Deputy UN high Commissioner for Human Rights.

Pansieri was speaking at a panel discussion, during the June session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, which analysed the root causes and challenges of child, early and forced marriage. Panellists also discussed some of the achievements and best practises to prevent and end the practice.

“The often wide age and power differentials between brides and husbands undermine the agency and autonomy of girls and young women,” Pansieri added. “The result is exposure to physical, psychological, economic and sexual violence; forced labour; so-called “honour” crimes; domestic slavery; and restrictions on their movement.”

Linking women & poverty, food sovereignty & security, & sexual & reproductive health & rights

Linking poverty and food (in)security. The four pillars for food security are availability, access, utilisation, and stability. This means that all people at all times have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active healthy life. The links between poverty and food insecurity are also straightforward. A poor individual is less likely to have access to adequate food, especially when food has to be purchased. Even when food is cultivated, because food needs to be sold in the market, poor landless farmers, tend to be food and nutrition insecure. This phenomenon has been exacerbated with the corporatisation of the agriculture sector, where the farmers are losing their lands to corporations, have less access and control over their seeds, are forced to mono-crop and have to switch from food crops to cash crops. Dumping of subsidised and poor quality food in developing countries also affects rural farmers. Women farmers (who are not even counted as farmers) often bear the greatest brunt because of lack of access to vital resources that enable them to farm, and to have to bear the additional burden of reproduction and caregiving. Food security encompasses nutrition security. A food secure, non-poor person may still have nutritionally inadequate caloric intake as for various reasons they may not consume adequate or appropriate food. Despite living in times of food surplus, an estimated 870 million people, accounting to one in eight, suffer from chronic undernourishment.

Transformative leadership - How leadership can create sustainable change that promotes women's rights & gender equality

Transformative Leadership, which is leadership for sustainable change, addresses the root causes of inequality. Transformative Leadership is a form of leadership which promotes gender justice by advancing women's participation and leadership. Transformative Leadership challenges structures and ideologies that justify and perpetuate gender inequality and power imbalance. Gender inequality derives from social and cultural socialization processes. In patriarchal societies, girls and women are classified (not always consciously) as less valuable, less strong, economically less attractive, not suitable for public leadership roles, needing protection and control, etc. Other aspects of identity, such as (dis)ability, HIV status, sexual orientation, race, class, caste, and religion, interrelate with people's biological sex; and this can result in multiple forms of discrimination. For Oxfam, this patriarchal, exclusive ideology is the main cause of the violation of women's right to equality.

The Millennium Development Goals Report 2014

At the turn of the century, world leaders came together at the United Nations and agreed on a bold vision for the future through the Millennium Declaration. The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were a pledge to uphold the principles of human dignity, equality and equity, and free the world from extreme poverty. The MDGs, with eight goals and a set of measurable time-bound targets, established a blueprint for tackling the most pressing development challenges of our time. This report examines the latest progress towards  achieving the MDGs. It reaffirms that the MDGs have made a profound difference in people’s lives. Global poverty has been halved five years ahead of the 2015 timeframe. Ninety per cent of children in developing regions now enjoy primary education, and disparities between boys and girls in enrolment have narrowed. Remarkable gains have also been made in the fight against malaria and tuberculosis, along with improvements in all health indicators. The likelihood of a child dying before age five has been nearly cut in half over the last two decades. That means that about 17,000 children are saved every day. We also met the target of halving the proportion of people who lack access to improved sources of water.
