Child Marriage - Fragile Progress in Global Fight - While Percentage of Girls Marrying Drops, Overall Numbers Climb Higher

By Alexandra Kotowski, Senior Associate, Women’s Rights Division – September  22, 2016

When Lalita was 12-years-old her parents arranged for her to marry a 37-year-old man. By the time Human Rights Watch met her last April in Nepal, she was 17 and had given birth to three children – two of whom died as newborns. “[The doctors] told me it was because I was too young,’” Lalita told us. Later her husband left her and married another woman. “I don’t want what happened to me to happen to [my daughter],” she said. “My life is destroyed. I hope it will turn out differently for her.”

Lalita lives in Nepal, but Human Rights Watch investigations in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Malawi, South Sudan, Tanzania, Yemen, and Zimbabwe have uncovered many similar stories. We consistently find that child marriage harms girls’ mental and physical well-being, and threatens their education and safety.

Lalita B., 17, had an arranged marriage at the age of 12 with a 37-year-old man. She became pregnant soon after marriage and two of her newborns died. Lalita's third child survived. Lalita's husband abandoned her in 2015 and married another woman. April 25, 2016.  © 2016 Smita Sharma for Human Rights Watch

"If we are honest, there are far too few women in our peacekeeping missions when a gender mix can have a major impact on operational effectiveness"

By Jo Griffin

LONDON, Sept 8, 2016 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - More women must be included in United Nations peacekeeping missions to help restore credibility to troops marred by accusations of sexual violence and to protect women in conflict, speakers at a U.N. defence summit said on Thursday.

Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, an active campaigner to stop sexual violence in conflict, joined defence ministers and military chiefs from around 70 countries at the summit aiming to improve the performance of U.N. peacekeeping operations.
