Women Speak Out for Peace: Global Media Campaign on the 2015 International Day of Peace

Dear GNWP Members, Friends and Colleagues,

On September 21, 2015 we will be commemorating again the International Peace Day. This year's theme "Partnerships for Peace - Dignity for All" aims to highlight the importance of all segments of society to work together to strive for peace.

For the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders, we use this global momentum to invite all of you to take part in the Women Speak Out for Peace: A Global Media Campaign. This wide-reaching campaign will take place from September 21 to 27, 2015.

This is a great opportunity for us to transform the dominant images of women in the media as victims to those of peacebuilders, decision-makers and change agents. It is also an opportunity to further raise awareness and knowledge of UNSCR 1325, 1820, and the supporting Women, Peace and Security (WPS) resolutions globally.

UN Approves More Open Selection of the Next Secretary-General, Including Consideration of Qualified Women

“The resolution invites all countries "to consider presenting women as candidates,” but also stresses the candidates must be highly competent.

By The Associated Press - September 11, 2015

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. General Assembly voted unanimously Friday to make the largely secretive selection of the U.N. secretary-general more open and transparent.

The resolution adopted by consensus will allow the world body's 193 member states for the first time to see basic information about all candidates to replace Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the start of 2017, including their resumes. They will also have the chance to meet and question candidates.

EU - Equality Between Men & Women - Legal Basis +

FACT SHEETS ON THE EUROPEAN UNION

Equality Between Men & Women

Equality between women and men is one of the objectives of the European Union. Over time, legislation, case-law and changes to the Treaties have helped shore up this principle and its implementation in the EU. The European Parliament has always been a fervent defender of the principle of equality between men and women.

Legal Basis

The principle that men and women should receive equal pay for equal work has been enshrined in the European Treaties since 1957 (today: Article 157 TFEU). Besides, Article 153 TFEU allows the EU to act in the wider area of equal opportunities and equal treatment in matters of employment and occupation. Within this framework, Article 157 TFEU furthermore authorises positive action to empower women. In addition, Article 19 TFEU enables legislation to combat all forms of discrimination, including on the basis of sex. Legislation against trafficking in human beings, in particular women and children, has been adopted on the basis of Articles 79 and 83 TFEU, and the Rights, Equality and Citizenship programme finances, among others, measures contributing to the eradication of violence against women, based on Article 168 TFEU.
