Climate Change through the Eyes of Women

By Jeanne Bourgault – December 1, 2015

“As it stands, women are the ones bearing the brunt of climate change — but if women were given training in using these types of technologies, they would have the power and knowledge to fend for themselves in times of great need. Right now, we’re talking about the rich-poor gap when it comes to global warming, but we need to be talking about the gender gap too.”

Renowned Indian environmental journalist Stella Paul won a prestigious award for shining a light on the connections between gender and climate change. But Stella says women’s voices need to be heard and data channels need to be improved if effective mitigation policies and measures are to be introduced following the COP21 talks in Paris.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Fact sheet N°110
Updated December 2015

Key facts

  • More than 1 million sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are acquired every day worldwide.

  • Each year, there are an estimated 357 million new infections with 1 of 4 STIs: chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and trichomoniasis.

  • More than 500 million people are estimated to have genital infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV).

  • More than 290 million women have a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.2

  • The majority of STIs have no symptoms or only mild symptoms that may not be recognized as an STI.

  • STIs such as HSV type 2 and syphilis can increase the risk of HIV acquisition.

  • In some cases, STIs can have serious reproductive health consequences beyond the immediate impact of the infection itself (e.g., infertility or mother-to-child transmission)

  • Drug resistance, especially for gonorrhoea, is a major threat to reducing the impact of STIs worldwide.

Promising Practices in Long Term Care: Sharing Ideas - 6 Countries

This book reports on the findings of an international team of 26 researchers and more than 50 graduate students who went to six countries in a search for promising practices in long term residential care for the elderly. It presents concrete examples of how long term care might be organized and undertaken in more promising ways that respect the needs of residents, families, workers and managers. Using statistical data that confirms Canada can afford the same promising care found in other countries, the book provides ideas on how we might re-imagine long term care in promising and hopeful ways.
