Kyrgyzstan’s Deadly Force

“Arbitrary arrest and torture.” According to the U.S. State Department, this is standard operating procedure for the police in Kyrgyzstan. 

Rarely is anyone held accountable. 

But over the past five years, in response to complaints filed by the Open Society Justice Initiative, the UN Human Rights Committee has declared Kyrgyzstan responsible for a series of deaths stemming from these abuses of law enforcement power. 

Now it’s time for comprehensive reform.

Forced Child Marriages on the Rise in the MENA Region

Beirut, Lebanon: In the midst of conflict and war, forced child marriages have increased considerably in the region, said rights activists who gathered wto conclude a three-day seminar on the topic at the Gefinor Rotana Hotel.

Sixty activists came together from 13 Arab countries to offer new insight into the issue while developing important strategies for the international community and governing actors to consider. 

“Any form of human trafficking is a crime against humanity,” said Jumana Merhi, the director of the Arab Institute for Human Rights in Lebanon. “We stress our rejection to any compromise on the rights of women in any way.” 

The workshop was launched by AIHRL, ABAAD MENA Organization, and supported by the Humanist Institute for Cooperation (HIVOS) and The Democratic Forum for Women in Transitional Societies.

Study: Women in Canada – Immigrant Women

31 October 2015 - Over 3.5 million immigrant women and girls were living in Canada in 2011, accounting for about one-fifth of the country’s female population. In that same year, 52.3% of the total immigrant population was female compared with 50.8% of Canada’s total population. In contrast, 100 years earlier, 38.7% of immigrants were women and girls compared with 47.0% of the total population.

Immigrant women were more likely than their Canadian-born counterparts to hold a university degree. Despite this, unemployment was higher among immigrant women compared with Canadian-born women. Furthermore, university-educated immigrant women were more likely than Canadian-born women to report that they were working in a position that required less education.

NGO CSW/NY Announces 2016 NGO CSW Women of Distinction Awardee

February 4, 2016 – New York, NY – The NGO Committee on the Status of Women, NY (NGO CSW/NY), one of the Regional Committees of CoNGO that advocates for women’s rights and gender equality, is pleased to announce the 2016 NGO CSW Forum Women of Distinction Awardee, Amina J. Mohammed.

Amina J. Mohammed was appointed Special Adviser on “Post-2015 Development Planning” to the United Nation’s Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 7 June 2012. She brought more than 30 years of experience as a development practitioner in the public and private sectors, as well as civil society.

Ms. Mohammed was appointed Hon Minister of the Environment by Nigerian President Mohammadu Buhari when he swore in his new Cabinet on 11 November 2015. She is also currently the CEO/Founder of the Center for Development Policy Solutions, a newly established think tank to address the policy and knowledge gaps within the Government, Parliament and private sector in development and civil society for robust advocacy materials. Mrs. Mohammed is also Adjunct Professor of the Master’s Programme for Development Practice at Columbia University, New York.

The European Parliament’s study “Evaluation of the Beijing Platform for Action +20 and the opportunities for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women in the Post--‐2015 Development Agenda” states that the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action remains “slow, uneven and limited”, while the process is under-resourced and suffers from a lack of political will.

Educational success, reflected in the increasing number of women in tertiary education and the fact that in Europe  they now account for more than 50% of higher education students, does not translate inn other areas.
