Mandatory Waiting Periods & Biased Abortion Counseling in Central & Eastern Europe - Women's Human Rights

A number of Central and Eastern European countries have recently enacted retrogressive laws and policies introducing new pre-conditions that women must fulfill before they can obtain legal abortion services. Mandatory waiting periods and biased counseling and information requirements are particularly common examples of these new prerequisites. This article considers these requirements in light of international human rights standards and public health guidelines, and outlines the manner in which, by imposing regressive barriers on women’s access to legal abortion services, these new laws and policies undermine women’s health and well-being, fail to respect women’s human rights, and reinforce harmful gender stereotypes and abortion stigma.

Shaping Futures - Program to Enhance Girls' Empowerment & Employability

PROGRAM TO ENHANCE THE EMPOWERMENT & EMPLOYABILITY OF GIRLS OF LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES IN DELHI

The PAGE project’s two main goals were to build girls’ self-efficacy and build their ability to identify; and to plan and realize their future personal and professional goals. PAGE was implemented in four government schools in New Delhi, India and was designed to engage adolescent girls (ages 15-17) from low-income communities. The empowerment indicators included measures of girls’ self-efficacy (their ability to have a say in critical decisions in their lives, around their marriages for instance), attitudes toward gender norms or gender equitable attitudes and recognition of discrimination in their lives. The employability indicators included measures of aspiration for higher studies and for a career, enrollment in learning opportunities outside school, seeking information for future goals and preparing a resume.

Family Members Linked to Nearly Half of Child Trafficking: New Data

November 28, 2017 -Geneva – Almost half of identified cases of child trafficking begin with some family member involvement, according to new data released by IOM, the UN Migration Agency.

These statistics, which are critical to human trafficking prevention efforts and the identification and protection of survivors, are based on data released by The Counter-Trafficking Data Collaborative (CTDC), the world’s first human trafficking data portal to include such data contributed by multiple agencies.

The extent of family involvement in the trafficking of children is up to four times higher than in cases of adult trafficking, suggesting the need for more prevention efforts specifically targeting children and their families. In addition, boys are more likely to be recruited by a family member than girls.

Corporate Power: A Looming Threat to the Fulfilment of Women's Human Rights

By Corina Rodríguez Enríquez (Argentina)

(Excerpt of chapter 5 of the civil society report Spotlight on Sustainable Development 2017)

There are a number of reasons to believe that the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a step forward for the realization of women´s human rights[1]. Not only are there several interrelated targets under the stand alone goal to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls (SDG 5), there are also specific targets under 11 other goals that link women’s rights to the three dimensions of sustainable development (social, economic and environmental). However, the SDGs do not explicitly recognize the links between women’s human rights, gender equality, and needed structural reforms in global economic governance and policies. One of the dimensions of global economic dynamics that must be urgently addressed is the role of the private sector, in particular the limits to corporate power that need to be established.
