Take Back the Tech! is a campaign that reclaims the internet and women's often ignored herstory with technology, exploring and encouraging the creative use of digital technologies to denounce and eliminate online gender-based violence (GBV). Its name echoes back to the Take Back the Night marches all over the world, where women reclaimed public streets as their own, especially at night when they were told to stay inside because it wasn't safe. Today, the streets of the internet are increasingly inseparable from the streets of our lives and our communities. The offline and online are fused together, just as online GBV is an integral part of the structural GBV we know so well – but at hyper speed and digitised.
Whether it is on the street, in our workplaces or on the internet, our right to be there is always questioned or we are made to feel uncomfortable, that we do not belong. Unless, of course, we follow the rules, only venture out in daylight and to certain places, avoid miniskirts and getting loud. From sexist remarks, unsolicited dick pics, or death threats – GBV attempts to silence us, push us out and make us unsafe in order to have an excuse to protect and control us. And yet, we dance in the streets. We have each other’s backs. We occupy all of these spaces with fun and furious creativity.

UN Climate Change News, 25 November 2019 - The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is a mainstay of the UN calendar, has assumed a new dimension with the challenges presented by climate change.
With the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report (https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/) on Global Warming of 1.5ºC predicting an increase in natural disasters and the subsequent devastation in communities around the world, gender-based violence risks becoming an even bigger problem if it is not properly tackled.
Unfortunately, violence against women and girls is deep-rooted in our societies and the international observance serves as a symbol of resistance as well as a call to action to eliminate gendered physical, economic and psychological violence. The 2019 theme is ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape.’
Climate change is recognized as a serious aggravator of gender-based violence. Around the world, climate change-induced crises have also been shown to worsen domestic violence, whether in relation to sexual and reproductive health or discrimination against indigenous communities.
Violence against women is a major public health problem rooted in gender inequality, and is a gross violation of women’s human rights affecting the lives and health of millions of women and girls.
