Midwives for Peace - Arab & Jewish - Grassroots Advocacy for Mothers, Babies, Peace

'We felt is was necessary to talk about what happened over the summer, that we owed it to each other.' Photo by courtesy

The original idea behind Midwives for Peace was that women had a special role to plan in grassroots peace initiatives:

“Pregnancy is the same wherever you are!”

BEIT JALA, West Bank – It’s been three months since this group of midwives last met, but considering the 50-day war in between, it seems more like ages.

Some have traveled far to get here, from kibbutzim near the Lebanese border and from the town of Jenin in the northern West Bank. A few are from Jerusalem (both the Jewish and Arab parts of the city), one comes from Tel Aviv and another from Ramallah. Situated just outside Bethlehem and a 10-minute drive from Jerusalem, Beit Jala is a convenient – and also relatively safe – meeting point for them all.

Women & The Right to Food - Discrimination Against Women - Women & Food Security +

Report of the Human Rights Council Advisory Committee - Study on discrimination in the context of the right to food, including identification of good practices of anti-discriminatory policies and strategies

Advance Edited Version E

Gender Excerpts:

II Discrimination in the Context of the Right to Food

  D. Discrimination Against Women

       31. The intersection between women's rights and the right to food provides a rich overview of a number of interrelated dimensions of     discrimination against women related to access to land, property and markets, which are inextricably linked to access to education, employment, health care, and political participation. On a global scale, women cultivate more than 50% of all food grown. Women nonetheless account for 70 per cent of the world's hungry and are dispro-portionately affected by malnutrition, poverty and food insecurity. Governments are not living up to their international commitments to protect women from discrimination, as the gap between de jure equality and de facto discrimination continues to persist and resist change…….

Financing for Development - Feminist Perspective from the Global South - Addis Ababa & Beyond

PWESCR has published “Financing for Development: Addis Ababa and Beyond- Feminist Perspective from the Global South” in the context of preparatory debates on the Financing for Development (FfD).

As the Third International Conference on FfD in Addis Ababa is to address the drawbacks of the MDG framework and get United Nations member states to negotiate a political agreement on how to finance development for the post-2015 development agenda, the paper argues that the global negotiations on financing policies to address poverty reduction, social inequalities, sustainable infrastructure and climate change should look at the development challenges in a holistic manner.

Stating FfD as a feminist issue, the brief argues that for financing to be effective in reducing poverty and delivering sustainable development, it needs to benefit women and men equally and contribute to empowering women and building equitable societies. The gendered division of labour, particularly unpaid work and gender-based labour market segregation, is not addressed properly in current discussions on FfD.

Global Education Targets at Risk, Especially for Girls

The  latest numbers show that some 24 million children will never enter a classroom with girls remaining the most disadvantaged in the study. In South and West Asia alone, 80 per cent of out-of-school girls are unlikely to start school compared to just 16 per cent for their male counterparts.

Global Education Targets at Risk Amid Surge in Out-of-School Numbers - UN Report – Girls’ Education

6 July 2015 – The number of out-of-school children and adolescents around the world has risen to worrying levels, dealing a potential blow to education targets aimed at achieving universal primary and secondary education, a new United Nations report has warned.

According to the study released today by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Education for All Global Monitoring Report (EFR GMR), 124 million children and adolescents are now out of school while international aid to education continues to remain below 2010 levels.
