Afghanistan Now Has 260 Female Judges

By Feminist Newswire - Apr 18, 2017

The head of the Afghan Women Judges’ Association, Shakila Abawi Shagarf, announced last month that there are now 260 female judges in Afghanistan as of this year. While the majority—225—are in the capital of Kabul, there are 21 in Harat province, 11 in Balkh province, two in Takhar province and one in Baghlan province. During the Taliban regime that fell sixteen years ago, there were no female judges.

While the progress has been strong, Shagarf lamented, “There should be at least one judge in the superior judiciary and at least on woman should also be present in the selection board of the Supreme Court.” She continued, “This would be an important step forward that would pave way for justice and equality in the country.”

Women & Chemicals - The Impact of Hazardous Chemicals on Women

WECF - Women in Europe for a Common Future - is an international network of over 150 women’s and civil society organisations implementing projects in 50 countries and advocating globally to shape a just and sustainable world.

In our modern societies, women and men are all continually exposed to hazardous chemicals in their every day lives. But women are often differently exposed due to their (entrenched) gender roles and because of biological susceptibilities and health impacts. In this publication WECF looks at the impacts of highly hazardous pesticides, mercury, and endocrine disrupting chemicals on women’s health.

Assessing Women's Inclusion & Influence on Peace Negotiations - Making Women Count: Not Just Counting Women

Fifteen years after the adoption of the landmark UN Security Council Resolution 1325, women remain significantly underrepresented in peace and transitional processes. A central challenge is the lack of evidence-based knowledge on the precise role and impact of women’s inclusion on peace processes. When women have been included in the past, it was mainly due to normative pressure applied by women’s groups and their international supporters.

This report is based on results from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies’ multi-year research project entitled “Broadening Participation in Political Negotiations and Implementation” (2011-ongoing), and was originally prepared as an input to the Global Study in preparation for the High-level Review on the Implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325.

The New Economic Model That Could Help End Inequality

Consider for Greater Gender Equality

Kate Raworth - Senior Visiting Research Associate, Environmental Change Institute, Oxford University – 28 April 2017

The hole at the Doughnut’s centre reveals the proportion of people worldwide falling short on life’s essentials, such as food, water, healthcare and political freedom of expression – and a big part of humanity’s challenge is to get everyone out of that hole. At the same time, however, we cannot afford to be overshooting the Doughnut’s outer crust if we are to safeguard Earth’s life-giving systems, such as a stable climate, healthy oceans and a protective ozone layer, on which all our wellbeing fundamentally depends.
