The CEDAW Committee also makes recommendations on any issue affecting women to which it believes the States parties should devote more attention. For example, at the 1989 session, the Committee discussed the high incidence of violence against women, requesting information on this problem from all countries. In 1992, the Committee adopted general recommendation 19 on violence against women, asking States parties to include in their periodic reports to the Committee statistical data on the incidence of violence against women, information on the provision of services for victims, and legislative and other measures taken to protect women against violence in their everyday lives, including against harassment at the workplace, abuse in the family and sexual violence. Now, the CEDAW Committee has adopted General Recommendation No. 35 on Violence Against Women, Updating General Recommendation 19.
March 6, 2017 - On a global scale, women and girls make up half of the world’s refugees and half of global migrants, but when it comes to those travelling to Europe, the story is quite different, Megan Passey writes on the Mixed Migration Platform Blog.
According to the latest figures from Eurostat females accounted for only 32% of all asylum applicants to EU countries in 2016 and have made up similarly low proportions for the past seven years.
Despite this, the proportion of women and girls among refugees and other migrants to Europe is increasing, especially among asylum seekers of certain nationalities. Compared to the year before, 2016 saw increased proportions of female applicants from all but one of the top ten nationalities of new arrivals to Europe – including a 47% increase in the proportion of women and girls from Iraq and 46% from Afghanistan.

In conjunction with formal work, women perform up to 3 times more unpaid work than men
8-16-2017 - By Joanna Nappi – Currently, 836 million people are living in extreme poverty, and in developing regions, one in five people live on less than $1.25 per day. Despite these staggering numbers, the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development dseeks to eradicate poverty by 2030 – this, though, cannot be achieved if we continue doing business as usual and leaving women behind. Recent studies have found that the economic empowerment of women is fundamental to poverty reduction and a pre-condition for sustainable development, harnessing the potential to significantly alter the course of the 2030 Agenda.
