Work of human rights treaty bodies at risk, warn UN Committee Chairs

GENEVA (4 August 2020) - Chairpersons of the 10 UN committees that monitor the implementation of international human right treaties have called on States to properly support their work, warning that the current underfunding is set to affect upcoming review meetings from September onwards.

“States have a legal obligation to fund the treaty bodies. Their refusal to fully do so is all the more outrageous amid the COVID-19 pandemic which has led to a wide range of human rights violations around the world,” the chairpersons said.

The call by the chairpersons follows their annual meeting, held virtually from 27-30 July. During the meeting, the members of the 10 human rights treaty bodies discussed their work and ways of enhancing the effectiveness of the treaty body system as a whole.

The chairpersons said that the current UN budget crisis is a major threat to their mission. They noted with dismay that there is currently no guaranteed funding available to support the treaty bodies’ meetings from September onwards. “We believe that in this time of unprecedented global crisis, the need to uphold human rights is greater than ever,” they stressed.

Tech Against Trafficking - Leveraging Technology to Combat Trafficking in Humans

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and Tech Against Trafficking,  a coalition of global tech companies and experts leveraging technology to help eradicate human trafficking, have jointly launched ‘Leveraging innovation to fight trafficking in human beings: A comprehensive analysis of technology tools’.

The report finds that while technology can be an effective tool in the drive to prevent human trafficking, it has simultaneously enabled traffickers to achieve greater efficiencies.

Specifically, technology tools are used by anti-trafficking stakeholders to prevent trafficking circumstances by enhancing technological capabilities among vulnerable and marginalized groups and communities (e.g. children and ethnic minorities); to investigate and prosecute criminal activities; to protect and support survivors; and to equip stakeholders with technical capacities and innovative approaches.

Women and Trade: The Role of Trade in Promoting Women’s Equality

Research shows that trade creates better jobs for women. Companies that export employ more women, pay them higher wages, and offer better benefits and job security. Photo: © Khasar Sandag/IFC

Trade can dramatically improve women’s lives, creating new jobs, enhancing consumer choice, and increasing women’s bargaining power in society. But women’s relationship with trade is complex, as it can also lead to job losses and a concentration of work in lower-skilled jobs To ensure that trade enhances opportunities for everyone—regardless of gender—policymakers should assess the potential impact of trade rules on various groups of people and develop policy responses based on evidence.

Research on gender equality and trade has been held back by limited data and a lack of understanding of the connections between the economic roles women play as workers, consumers, and decision makers. Building on new analysis and new sex-disaggregated data, this report aims to advance understanding on the relationship between trade and gender equality and to identify a series of opportunities through which women can gain from trade.
