GlobalStat is a public information tool which collects data through collaboration with more than eighty International institutions and entities, including the IMF, OECD, Transparency International and the World Bank. The project is based at the European University Institute and, in particular, benefits from the EUI’s Global Governance Programme’s research. It aims to create transparent and accessible information on developments in a globalised world. Political scientist Gaby Umbach is director of GlobalStat.
GlobalStat, in collaboration with the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS), have released a series of briefings to mark International Women’s Day 2017 on March 8th.
‘In the best of GlobalStat traditions, the new GlobalStat-EPRS briefing series ‘Empowering Women in the EU and beyond’ informs about the way women live, the freedoms they enjoy and the limitations they face in the EU and around the world,’ explained GlobalStat Director Gaby Umbach.

UN General Assembly Adopts Declaration Affirming Commitment to End Human Trafficking, Amidst Calls for Victim-Centered Approaches
‘I Didn’t Have Any Identity’, Survivor Recalls, Stressing that the Outcome Document Must Come to Life in Communities Across Globe
27 September 2017 - Survivors of human trafficking today recounted painful stories of kidnapping, violence and rape — often the result of criminals exploiting their hopes for a better life — as the General Assembly adopted a Political Declaration aimed at combating that brutal practice.
The Assembly endorsed the “political declaration on the implementation of the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons” by consensus at the outset of its two‑day high‑level meeting on human trafficking, which many speakers described as “modern-day slavery”. Member States reaffirmed their commitment to that instrument, and to the related 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In particular, they agreed to address the many social, economic, cultural and political factors that increased people’s vulnerability to trafficking, including poverty, unemployment, inequality, conflict, humanitarian emergencies and gender discrimination.

Today, there is widespread recognition that gender-based violence (GBV) is a human rights violation and pervasive global health challenge with many consequences for women and girls including physical injury, psychological trauma, unwanted pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.
As we approach the 2017 Sexual Violence Research Initiative forum in Brazil, we need to take stock of emerging evidence which shows that GBV has a significant impact on women’s use of HIV services, including HIV testing, and care and treatment for those living with HIV. Women’s decreased use of HIV services jeopardizes their own health and well- being as well as broader public health aims, namely UNAIDS 90-90-90 goals for ending the AIDS epidemic through increased uptake of HIV testing, and greater initiation and adherence to anti-retroviral therapy (ART), and viral suppression.
Equality between women and men is one of the objectives of the European Union. Over time, legislation, case-law and changes to the Treaties have helped shore up this principle and its implementation in the EU. The European Parliament has always been a fervent defender of the principle of equality between men and women.
