Older Women & New Technologies: Challenging Ageism

2017 Trust Conference Action

By Silvia Perel-Levin, International Longevity Centre Global Alliance ILCGA, (Switzerland)

Summary: Challenging ageism and ensuring older women are included in the development of new technologies.

……………….

The Problem

Women suffer from multiple and cumulative forms of discrimination and violence throughout their entire life. Older women generally live longer than men, they are more likely than men to live alone, suffer more ill health and are less likely to have access to an income. Along with rapid ageing, technologies also develop at a furious pace. Older women find themselves outside the technological revolution that we experience. We need to challenge the prejudice that because a woman is older, she cannot learn or she does not understand technology. The inclusion of older women in the design and use of new technologies to improve their lives and combat discrimination is not a luxury, it is a human right.

What help is needed

  • Financial and technical support to work with experts in the field and establish ‘living labs’

  • Legal pro bono advice to help us examine the legal, ethical and financial barriers that exist in relation to including older women and to propose an international legal framework

  • Support from the media industries to devise and launch an awareness campaign to provoke a debate about ageism and promote social change.
