Sustainable Development 2015 has been created as an information hub to provide updates, background information and analysis on the key international processes emerging from the 2012 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). The primary processes being tracked by Sustainable Development 2015 are: efforts to create a set of universal sustainable development goals (SDGs); discussions to develop a strategy to finance international sustainable development; and the creation of a new institutional home for sustainable development within the United Nations system (governance).
This site is also intended to act as a platform to connect interested organisations and individuals with the discussions taking place at the international level, and to encourage and support stakeholders to engage with these processes.
Why 2015?
There is a growing international consensus that the sustainable development goals (SDGs) will become the successor framework to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which are due to expire at the end of 2015. As the year in which the SDGs - as the primary component of the new international architecture for sustainable development - will be agreed upon, 2015 is therefore a crucial milestone.
The other processes tracked on this website also have relevance for the SDGs and the 2015 milestone: The High Level Political Forum (HLPF) is set to become the new institutional home for sustainable development within the UN system, therefore whilst its purpose and activities will not be limited to SDGs, the HLPF will inevitably play a major role in the coordination and monitoring of efforts around the new global goals.
A new finance strategy will be crucial to the mobilisation of resources and their effective use in the implementation of sustainable development, including the achievement of the SDGs.
About Stakeholder Forum
Sustainable Development 2015 is administered by Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future, an international organisation working to advance sustainable development and promote democracy at a global level. Our work aims to enhance open, accountable and participatory international decision-making on sustainable development through enhancing the involvement of stakeholders in intergovernmental processes.
Stakeholder Forum seeks to provide a bridge between those who have a stake in sustainable development, and the international forums where decisions are made in their name. To this end, we work with a diversity of stakeholders globally on international policy development and advocacy; stakeholder engagement and consultation; media and communications and capacity building – all with the ultimate objective of promoting progressive outcomes on sustainable development through an open and participatory approach.
