FGM - End FGM European Network

END FGM EUROPEAN NETWORK POSTPONED 2-3 DECEMBER EVENTS – BELGIUM SECURITY ISSUES – EVENTS TO BE RESCHEDULED IN JANUARY 2016

Due to the decision taken by the Belgian government to maintain the security level to its highest level, the END FGM European Network has decided to postpone the Knowledge sharing seminar on the best interests of the child  and the "Launch party" on the 2nd of December 2015 and the General Assembly on 3rd December. These events will now be planned for the third or fourth week of January 2016 and we will be in touch with you very soon to confirm this new date. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this change in plans, but we hope you will appreciate that the safety and well being of all our members, participants and guests must come first. We look forward to working with you towards a successful and celebratory event in 2016.

KEY COMMITMENTS FOR EUROPE

The END FGM European Network wants the European Union to adopt a comprehensive approach to end female genital mutilation and protect women and girls fleeing their countries for fear of being mutilated.

Our five-point strategy, prepared together with member organisations on the ground, experts in the field of law, human rights and development, calls on the EU to tackle FGM through these key areas of action:

Data collection (More info)

Health (More info)

Integrating FGM into broader measures on violence against women and girls (More info)

Protect asylum seekers and refugees affected by, or at risk of, FGM (More info)

Include FGM in EU’s engagements with rest of the world (More info)

One concrete step that the EU and each member state should take to address FGM is to sign and ratify the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. Adopted in 2011, the Convention addresses FGM through the perspective of prevention, protection and prosecution. For more information, please read the Convention here.

What have we achieved so far?

Since 2009, the END FGM Campaign has:

  • raised the support of over 42,000 people calling for EU action

  • committed over 50 Members of the European Parliament to fight against FGM

  • advocated the issue of FGM to be included in EU policies and legislation on asylum, justice, gender equality and external actions (to track Europe’s Response, click here)
